The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) III Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in Vascular Surgery to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The Vascular Surgery NP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. The NP practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification and has prescriptive authority for a panel of patients or program as indicated by their position.
The Vascular Surgery APN/NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients. Major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: Independently managing a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice Providing assessments, evaluations, and care coordination of Veterans Developing and implementing an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management Ordering and interpreting labs, tests, and diagnostic studies Prescribing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions Aiding in health promotion, disease prevention, and health education Initiating referrals/consults for services, serving as a VA and community liaison Providing education to patients and their families Assessing and adjusting plans of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes Providing consultation regarding Veterans with surgical specialty problems Meeting standards and regulatory requirements, such as Joint Commission, Performance Measures, and Clinical Practice Guidelines Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team in planning, implementation, and evaluation of surgical care for Veterans Maintaining written scopes of practice to medical aspects of patient care that are agreed upon and reviewed every 2 years by the APN and collaborating physician Making practice decisions autonomously and in consultation with physician and health care professionals, in a collegial relationship for mutual consultation and referral Reviewing consults for Vascular Surgery and assigns to appropriate clinics for scheduling by MAS. Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
