The primary purpose of this position, Aircraft Mechanic, WG-8852-12, is to serve as crew chief and technical authority, with custody of assigned prototype, pre-production, or heavily modified aircraft. These aircraft support crucial research, development, test, and evaluation programs. The primary responsibility is to ensure mission readiness.
1. Serve as crew chief of assigned aircraft and be responsible for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing maintenance on aircraft that are non-fielded, prototype or preproduction, and/or extensively modified (Type 2) production aircraft that are dedicated to support research, development, test and evaluation, perform in-service testing of potential replacement items (form, fit, function), and for aircraft/stores compatibility testing. 2.
Perform aircraft inspections including preflight, postflight, phase, and other scheduled and unscheduled inspections. 3. Diagnose and identify probable locations of malfunctions from the cockpit during engine run-up. 4. Initiate requests for unscheduled tools, equipment, and materials identified during preparation for flight. 5. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work area.
