You will serve as an Archeologist at the Katmai National Park & Preserve in King Salmon, Alaska. Please visit find a park for additional park information. This is a Permanent, Competitive, Full-time, Career-Seasonal appointment. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.
This position serves as a cultural resources specialist and compliance coordinator for Katmai National Park and Preserve, Aniakchak Monument and Alagnak Wild River. During high/summer season (May-September) much of the work is conducted in a field environment.
At the full performance level (GS-11) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Serving as cultural resource compliance coordinator for park's projects Acting as Crew Chief and overseeing fieldwork and data collection activities. Inventorying and monitoring the condition of cultural resources and compliance projects in areas impacted by construction and visitor activities.
Performing archeological surveys, test excavations, laboratory processing and analysis of artifacts recovered. Providing historical and archeological information to visitors. Managing archeological collections according to established museum procedures. Preparing detailed field notes and records, daily logs and journals, photographs and photo logs, archeological and architectural forms, feature and artifact drawings.
Preparing monthly progress reports and a final seasonal report with the assistance of field staff. Using and overseeing the use of GPS, GIS and other computer software in support of data collection and reporting activities.
