You will train with and assist senior Internal Review (IR) auditors-agents of the United States Property and Fiscal Officer-to conduct performance, compliance, and financial audits that improve readiness, accountability, and stewardship of federal funds across Nevada Army National Guard programs.
Serves as an auditor in the Internal Review office, performing reviews, studies, and internal examinations of accounting and operational functions, and assisting higher-graded auditors with full-scale, more complex audits. At the GS-7/9 (developmental) levels, the incumbent works closely with senior auditors, receiving mentoring and on-the-job training in Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS), internal controls, and DoD/Army/Army National Guard policies.
Examines processes, documents, and reports to determine whether performance has been in accordance with accounting principles, operating procedures, and applicable regulations. Observes operating practices, reviews reports from internal and external sources, evaluates findings, and recommends areas and types of corrective or improvement actions. Assists in developing formal audit reports and recommendations for submission to the United States Property and Fiscal Officer.
Attends in-briefs with management officials, performs survey work to identify potential operating problems, prepares lead sheets to identify potential weaknesses in internal controls, and documents results in accordance with Comptroller General Standards and DoD, Army, Air Force, and Army National Guard policies.
Drafts findings identifying causative situations and recommends corrective action; participates in discussions of findings with activity personnel; explains results; and performs follow-up on agreed-to findings and recommendations.
At higher grades, particularly GS-11 (journey) and GS-12 (senior), the incumbent independently plans and conducts complete audit assignments, designs audit procedures, analyzes financial and operational data, and develops findings and recommendations. As experience is gained, auditors present results to management officials and, when appropriate, senior leaders.
Senior auditors lead more complex audits, provide technical input on internal control and risk topics, coordinate with multiple directorates, and may oversee small audit teams and follow-up activities. Internal Review auditors in the Nevada Army National Guard conduct independent, professional performance and compliance audits across a wide range of programs (financial management, logistics, training support, construction, and other activities).
The work is analytical and varied, involving review of business and operational information, evaluation of internal controls, and development of practical recommendations to improve how money and resources are managed across the state. Auditors travel around Nevada to conduct reviews, participate in in-briefs and exit conferences, and provide objective feedback to help managers and leaders strengthen their programs.
