Job Summary

The Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) Educator position responsibilities requires that the incumbent demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to support the medication administration as a mission-critical process for the entire facility.

The BCMA Educator is accountable forcoordinating the local application of these requirements and will use resources such as the local Clinical Bar Code Multidisciplinary Committee to assess contingency solutions and address issues.

Key Responsibilities

The Bar Code Administration (BCMA) Educator exercises leadership in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of Bar Code Administration process. The BCMA Educator works with direct care staff on their assigned units throughout the facility to assure that all resources are in place to facilitate bar coding for medication administration.

This includes hardware, software changes, educational needs, pharmacy, and the Office of Information Technology (01& T) to assure seamless functioning to support the safety of patient care.

As bar coding activities are expanded for either medication administration or other functions, such as blood administration or specimen collection, the BCMA Educator works with all stakeholders to assure that appropriate resources are available, and the required education and knowledge is provided to the direct care staff. The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.

This position requires potentially long periods of constant walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring objects and equipment may be required. The BCMA Educator must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on the needs of the patients. The incumbent works with national groups and VISN level groups to assure standardization across settings.

The BCMA Educator works with vendors as appropriate, to assure the best hardware to support nursing care. The BCMA Educator serves as the administrator for the facility BCMA program.
