Job Summary

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Commissioner, located in Washington DC. Additional selections may be made beyond the total number of vacancies specified using this vacancy announcement. Key Responsibilities

The primary and paramount function of this position is to serve as a senior Border Patrol Agent and tactical operations operator, providing advanced border enforcement expertise and high-level advisory support to the Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) and the Office of the Commissioner.

The incumbent plans and advises on complex, multi-sector border enforcement and interdiction operations in support of Commissioner-directed priorities and field engagements; conducts multi-sector threat, risk, and vulnerability assessments focused on illegal entry and smuggling routes; integrates U.S.

Border Patrol enforcement tactics, intelligence, and capabilities into tactical operations directed or overseen by the Office of the Commissioner; and develops and supports Border Patrol safety, training, and readiness initiatives related to BORTAC operations. This position starts at a salary of $147,899.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $192,275.00 (GS-14, Step 10).

Major duties include: Provides senior Border Patrol enforcement and BORTAC advisory support to Office of the Commissioner leadership on complex, multi-sector Border Patrol operations, tactical initiatives, and critical border security issues. Reviews and synthesizes operational reports, intelligence products, law enforcement information, and field feedback to identify smuggling routes, recurring patterns, vulnerabilities, operational gaps, and emerging threats.

Recommends enforcement concepts, tactical security postures, patrol patterns, checkpoint operations, interdiction tactics, surveillance activities, and resource alignment to improve border security operations. Supports protective security operations for the Commissioner during official travel, site visits, and engagements in high-risk border environments by conducting advance assessments, route reconnaissance, and border-focused risk reviews.

Supports Border Patrol safety, training, and readiness initiatives related to BORTAC and Commissioner-directed operations, including scenario-based training, readiness exercises, emergency response, and tactical and life-safety equipment accountability. Temporary/Rotational Assignment: To meet agency needs, this position will be filled on a temporary basis not-to-exceed (NTE) one (1) year with possible extensions for an additional four (4) years, in one (1) year increments.

You may be returned, at any time, to the position from which temporarily promoted, or to a different position of equivalent grade and pay, and the return is not subject to the procedures found in 5 C.F.R. §§ 351, 432, 752, and 771. If you are currently at the grade level of the position announced, this action will result in a reassignment, and you may be returned at any time to a same or similar position held prior to this temporary assignment.

If you currently hold a grade level higher than the grade being announced, this action will result in a change to lower grade, and you may be returned at any time to the position held prior to this temporary assignment or to the same or similar position at the lower grade level. Return to your original location will be prioritized, but is not guaranteed.
