Job Summary

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, Portland Field Office, Area Port of Anchorage, located in Sitka, Alaska.

Key Responsibilities

This is a Reassignment Opportunity Bulletin: You must be currently serving or have previously served as a permanent GS-12 with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and are currently serving or have served in the 1895 series within the last five years to qualify under this Bulletin. If you hold or have previously held the GS-1895-13 level or higher and are willing to take a change to lower grade, you will also be considered for this position.

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise to detect and prevent terrorists and instruments of terror from entering the U.S. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen Homeland Security by performing law enforcement activities such as inspection, intelligence analysis, examination, and interpretation of laws and regulations.

This position starts at a salary of $104,013.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $135,219.00 (GS-12, Step 10). Salary above includes Special Rate for Customs and Border Protection Officer positions in the Alaska locality pay area. Salary above excludes cost-of-living allowance (COLA). In this position you will become a key member of a team of homeland security professionals responsible for detecting and preventing terrorists and instruments of terror from entering the U.S.

Typical work assignments include: Performing inspections and enforcement of persons, merchandise, and conveyances at ports of entryin the United States to not only ensure the legal entry of persons, merchandise, and conveyances,but also to prevent terrorists and instruments of terror from entering the United States. Interpreting and applying laws, rules, and regulations of over forty Federal agencies.

Advising and assisting the public and trade community on CBP policies and procedures, includingimmigration and document requirements, import/export changes/restrictions, overages/shortages,weight discrepancies, misdirected shipments, or possible seizures of merchandise.

Targeting, inspecting, and interviewing low to high risk, self-selected, and randomly selectedpersons, merchandise, conveyances, and cargo for contraband and compliance with applicableregulations with minimal to no supervision and/or guidance from a supervisor. Processing required documentation for other Federal agencies and serving as a direct liaison with those agencies as needed.

Requirements & Education

Selectee(s) are required to attend and successfully complete 101-days of paid training at the CBP Field Operations Academy (FOA) in Glynco, GA. Prior to arriving at the FOA, selectee's must complete approximately 7-10 days of pre-academy training.

Upon successful completion of FOA training, selectee's must complete an additional 14-17 weeks of post-academy training the selectee(s) assigned duty station. You may be required to successfully complete the training requirement as a condition of employment.

Failure to successfully complete the required course(s) of training in accordance with CBP standards and policies will result in placement into either a former or different position, demotion, or separation as determined by management and appropriate procedures.
