This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The Orlando VA Healthcare System Pathology and Laboratory Service is looking for an experienced Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) to join their Night Shift team at the main Hospital facility located at Lake Nona-Orlando, Florida. Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) GS-11 is considered the full performance level for nonsupervisory positions. CLS at this level carries out the day-to-day operations in the laboratory. Performs routine and STAT testing, quality control, routine maintenance of instrumentation and troubleshooting. The CLS develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results ensuring all laboratory regulatory requirements are met. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, following practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. These require a broad exercise of independent judgement and responsibility, including organizing and setting priorities with minimal technical supervision. The work performed is in a variety of laboratory disciplines such as bacteriology, chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), molecular biology, coagulation, hematology, flow cytometry, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), mycology, parasitology, serology, urinalysis, and virology. Such positions include requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; and provide education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals, and others in the medical center setting including the public in a professional, courteous, and effective manner. Duties Include: The CLS may perform venipunctures, or capillary punctures, or may assist in bone marrow or other specimen collections. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Assist in reference testing (send out), lab specimen collections/receiving, laboratory specimen preservation, processing, and submit and ship specimens to approved reference laboratory and report reference laboratories. Assist the section's Lead CLS and/or Supervisory CLS in new test systems validations/verifications, method correlations, linearities/AMR verifications, establishment of normal reference ranges, among other studies as mandated by accrediting agencies. Performs steps of analysis for a full range of standard, routine, and specialized tests; selects appropriate method/instrument; performs instrument maintenance and performance checks; prepares reagents/media; calibrates or verifies calibration of the assay; performs analysis and calculates results, if applicable, for control and unknown samples. Performs quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports. Recognizes abnormal results, unexpected and/or critical test values that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly in accordance with approved policy. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results. Work Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday, 11pm to 7am; rotating weekends/Holidays and extended hours based on needs of the service.
