Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse Educator in the surgical and procedural areas such as Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, and Outpatient Surgical Services supports the development of nursing staff by providing independent, evidence-based education to nurses across areas within the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, demonstrating increasing expertise in instructional design, implementation, and evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to: Supports the development of nursing staff by providing independent, evidence-based education to nursing staff across patient care areas within the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, demonstrating increasing expertise in instructional design, implementation, and evaluation. Conducts comprehensive learning needs assessments, develops and delivers educational programs, and collaborates in the orientation of new employees.

This includes monitoring progress, offering guidance, and assisting in the creation of individualized learning plans to address identified knowledge or skill gaps. Applies proficient coaching and mentoring strategies to support professional growth and strengthen clinical decision-making.

Educational content developed and delivered in this role incorporates the unique health needs of Veterans, integrating concepts such as military culture, service-connected conditions, trauma-informed care, and whole health principles. Fosters an environment that supports compassionate and personalized care aligned with VA's mission and core values.

Evaluates current clinical practices, reviews evidence-based literature, and makes informed recommendations to improve patient care processes and documentation. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and fellow Clinical Nurse Educators to support ongoing education, skills training, competency assessments, and in-services for both newly hired and experienced nursing staff.

Supports nurse residency programs by contributing to curriculum development, facilitating learning activities, and utilizing diverse teaching strategies such as simulation, case studies, and virtual learning platforms. Participates in organizational committees, providing input related to educational initiatives and supporting activities that build nursing competency and promote high-quality patient outcomes.

Regarding emergency preparedness, the educator serves as a trainer and consultant within the Resuscitation Education Initiative (REdI) Program, monitors and tracks BLS/ALS compliance, leads mock code activities, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to strengthen staff readiness for emergency responses.

Requirements & Education

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program.

Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.

(Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program.

Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).

Benefits

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
