Key Responsibilities

As the Senior Deputy Assistant Director for the Correctional Programs Division, the incumbent assists the Assistant Director in the responsibility for planning, developing, managing, coordinating, and evaluating the programs in the functional areas noted above. They also assist in the development of policies and implementing instructions, and approval of issuances effecting major policy change.

The incumbent assists the Assistant Director in the responsibility for directing the classification, security designation, and case management programs by establishing appropriate methods of operation. The incumbent devises solutions for the most difficult problems and recommends treatment in the most complicated cases.

As a principal member of the Assistant Director's leadership team, the incumbent assists the Assistant Director in the development and issuance of service-wide policy guidelines for the implementation and operation of the assigned functions and programs throughout the BOP and for providing advice and technical assistance to regional staff and, through them, to institution managers. The incumbent is responsible for assisting in coordinating assigned program operations.

The incumbent conducts visits to consult with regional managers to resolve problems and evaluate effectiveness of operations. In cooperation with regional staff, they conduct field visits to monitor field activities and assist in the resolution of major problems involving system-wide policy determinations. The incumbent also assists regional staff in adapting programs to meet particular needs of institutions in the respective region.

The incumbent also provides top level advice to the Assistant Director and Director of the BOP concerning assigned program areas, both operational and under development, and the impact these programs have on the total management of the agency.

The incumbent serves as a liaison between the Correctional Programs Division and other divisions and offices, as well as outside agencies, such as United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, United States Marshals Service, and the United States Parole Commission.

In this capacity, he or she serves as the focal point within the Division for the planning, implementation, and monitoring of programs being developed in new BOP facilities and provides support and assistance for program changes.
