The Cytotechnologist include managing operations within the Cytopathology Laboratory of Anatomic Pathology. The incumbent performs a full range of highly complex cytologic examinations and specialized diagnostic procedures to identify pathological diseases, cellular abnormalities, and other clinically significant conditions using human cellular specimens.
Duties include but not limited to: Performs highly complex testing on cellular material from all human body sites. Examines prepared cytological specimens and render diagnoses. Recognizes normal and abnormal cytology, including but not limited to, malignant neoplasm, precancerous lesions, infectious agents and inflammatory processes in gynecologic, non-gynecologic and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens.
Detects, selects and clearly marks the cells most representative of the pathologic processes. Develops, implements, and monitors the lab's Quality Control/Assurance Program (QC/A) to provide improved veteran care. Monitors workload and productivity and recommends improvements where needed. Evaluates requested procedures to determine the suitability of specimens for processing and request new specimens if determined unusable.
Provides expertise for operation of a wide variety of automated and manual equipment. Enters final diagnosis for all cytology specimens into Veterans Health Information Systems Technology and Architecture (VISTA) with proper terminology, Procedural, Workload Recording, Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. Compiles data and implements changes based upon evolving trends or research outcomes.
Provides statistical, demographic and diagnostic lists based upon the request of the researchers.
