Dental assistants at this level serve at the full performance level with the ability to perform full range of duties with some independence in assigned specialties, with indirect supervision from the lead dental assistant, dental assistant supervisor or treating dentist.

Cleaning dental unit for timely turnover. Passing instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently. Keeping operative field clear of debris and retracting oral tissues effectively and comfortably. Preparing dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer's instructions. Accomplishing all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols. Assisting in routine general dental procedures. Assisting in specialized dental procedures, such as oral maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, surgical periodontics, implant placement and restoration. Using the concepts of four-handed dentistry. Taking preliminary impressions. Selecting and manipulating a variety of gypsums and waxes. Pouring, trimming and evaluating the quality of diagnostic casts. Fabricating custom trays at the SLC VAHCS. Assisting patients in scheduling appointments. Assisting dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in patient records. Maintaining patient confidentiality per HIPAA with written and verbal information. Providing accurate and understandable instructions to patients.
