Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: https://youtube.com/embed/I-4ku5UMvWM Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Generalist) Duties: This is the full performance position as a diagnostic radiologic technologist with 1 year equivalent to at least next lower grade level and has undergone a two year approved training program and is ARRT certified.

Objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. Prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations.

All diagnostic radiologic technologists must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS). Primarily performs complicated radiographic examinations. Receives patients, explains method of procedure, positions patient, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjust accessory equipment required, makes exposures necessary for the requested examination and archives images.

Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP, cystogram, cholangiograms, fistulagrams and arthrography; and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal exams of the GI tract. Performs all routine examinations such as head, chest, extremities, and abdominal studies. As work load dictates, may also perform bone density exams, non-contrast CT head and abdomen scans.

Operates the mobile x-ray machines in the operating rooms, nursing and intensive care units and the emergency room. Maintains a safe working environment by proper use of radiation safety protection such as proper collimation, use of lead aprons, proper shielding and techniques to obtain diagnostic images. Utilizes quality control techniques, and assures that examinations performed are properly archived.

M Participates in on-the-job training of radiologic technologist trainees who are assigned to the VA through the affiliated teaching programs. Maintains current knowledge of new developments in the field of Allied Health Sciences, as related to Radiologic Technology. Utilizes time efficiently in order to perform the required number of procedures and decrease wait time of the patient without compromising quality standards.

Observes and trains rotating x-ray students and technologists. Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients in terms that patient will comprehend as well as understanding potential hazards that may occur as a result of the exam. Receives and interprets all radiology requests by reading the order and history. Registers the exam. Cancels and edits exams via the computer radiology information system (RIS) as necessary and after consulting with the staff Radiologist.

Properly labels patient images/films using L & R markers. Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. Must be capable of working without direct supervision. Radiographs are reviewed by radiologist on a spot-check basis. Performs irregular stand-by duty on a rotational basis to provide 24 hour hospital coverage. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
