Job Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located organizationally in Software, Platforms, Finance and Administration, Office of Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Under Secretary for Finance and Administration, Smithsonian Institution (SI).

Key Responsibilities

The Supervisory Information Technology Specialist is responsible for providing strategic, managerial and policy leadership for mission critical enterprise software platforms that enable research, facilities, collections management, capital programs, financial administration and public facing digital services.

In this position, you will: Establish and enforce Institution-wide policies, standards and governance frameworks for enterprise and specialized software platforms; serve as final technical and managerial authority for software lifecycle decisions; develop institutional guidance and integrate software governance with architecture, cybersecurity, procurement, capital planning and internal controls.

Direct a portfolio of mission-critical enterprise software platforms; oversee licensing strategies, vendor relationships, entitlement compliance and cost optimization; conduct enterprise risk assessments and resolve high-impact cross-organizational issues.

Direct, monitor and evaluate staff and contractor; develop technical requirements and contractor documents; provide guidance on work and administrative matters; recommend personnel actions; resolve conflicts; develop performance standards; addresses employee issues and recognize performance.

Serve as principal advisor to senior leadership; represent the organization in governance bodies and executive working groups; advise on business, financial, compliance and risk implications of software investments; engage vendors, oversight bodies and external partners to negotiate solutions to complex, high-risk issues.
