Job Summary

This position is eligible for a recruitment incentive which can be discussed during hiring. This position is a Journeyman Electrician position and is in the Facility Management Service, Electric Shop at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Syracuse, New York.

Key Responsibilities

This position is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and testing, new and existing electrical wires, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls; Interprets basic electronic terms and symbols when reading technical/system diagrams and schematics; Applies a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground and install wiring and equipment for electrical/electronic systems; Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices; Inspects electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers; Identifies electrical problems using a variety of testing devices; Interprets and applies state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code; Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations; Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 3:00pm with rotating evenings from 2:00pm to 10:30pm. Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD01200A Physical Requirements: Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

The work requires frequent lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds. Recruitment Incentive: Authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not authorized.
