This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services (textile distribution and inventory activity, sanitizing, e.g.,).
Work is regularly performed by hand and with light and heavy-powered (industrial-type) cleaning equipment (scrubbers, buffers, spray) disinfecting equipment, and vacuum cleaners).
Major duties include, but not limited to the following: Performs infection control and hazardous waste procedures, following proper task sequences to remove soiled and contaminated textiles, needle boxes, and body fluid spills, and understands the process of handling biohazardous waste. Identifies different types of medical, non-medical, biohazardous, hazardous, and normal waste to properly carry out duties.
Cleans and replaces needle boxes in accordance with safety standards. Cleans reusable medical equipment (RME) in inpatient and clinical areas according to established procedures. Adjusts, cleans, and performs minor maintenance on equipment, including changing attachments for proper use and optimal results. Utilizes pressure washers and industrial-powered equipment to complete cleaning tasks effectively.
Operates light and heavy industrial cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, to perform assigned duties. Cleans restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, ensuring they meet acceptable sanitation standards by disinfecting and deodorizing fixtures and surfaces. Works independently or as part of a team to complete the full range of cleaning duties across assigned areas of the medical facility.
Replenishes supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and soap in designated areas. Reads, writes, and performs simple math to accurately record waste and laundry handling processes.
