Job Summary

The Evansville, IN VA Health Care Center is seeking a Fee Basis Anesthesiologist to join their Anesthesia Service. Note: The utilization of Fee Basis appointments is centered on the service needs rather than a specified tour of duty.

Key Responsibilities

The attending anesthesiologist is charged with delivering the best possible anesthesia care to our Veteran outpatients. This care must be delivered in accordance with hospital policy and must meet community standards. The attending anesthesiologist performs pre-operative and pre-procedural anesthetic risk assessment.

Evaluation includes obtaining relevant history, performing physical examination, reviewing vital signs, lab values and all other relevant diagnostic studies prior to surgery. Appropriate notes are written in the patient's medical record. Sites of responsibility include providing patient care in the Operating Room, PACU, Intensive Care Unit, Pain Clinic, IR Suite, GI Suite, and other locations as required.

The attending anesthesiologist provides direct anesthesia services including the administration of anesthetic agents, and performance of duties including but not limited to: Peripheral IV placement, arterial catheter placement, central venous catheter placement, and placement of related invasive and non-invasive monitoring devices. Participation in the anesthesia pre-operative assessment clinic. Supervision of CRNAs in provision of anesthesia team care.

Maintains ACLS and BLS certification. Responsible for providing objective information regarding risks and benefits of relevant anesthetic treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient, legal guardian, or next of kin prior to administering said treatments. Performs face-to-face consultations and e-consultations as requested. Works effectively with patients, families, co-workers, and other health care professionals while treating them with respect and dignity.

Complies with information security policy and procedures. Provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the patient. Must demonstrate the knowledge of the changes associated with aging and diseases process and the ability to provide care based upon age and disease related factors as specified on the competence assessment checklist.

Uses the best available procedures and performs them at or above national statistical levels. Maintains skill in use of the VA electronical medical record. Work Schedule: There is no set work schedule. Services are rendered as needed and agreed with the facility. Pay: Based on approved pay rates per task or service.

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
