The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position. Analyze innocent spouse claims to determine eligibility for relief from joint and several liability under the provisions of IRC 6015 and IRC 66.
Reviews audit packages, tax records, and supporting documentation to identify items that caused deficiencies and assess the claimant's participation and knowledge of the underlying tax issues.
Evaluates complex and often controversial factors, including the extend of an individual's understanding of their tax responsibilities, the presence of honest mistakes or fraudulent intent, forgery versus tacit consent, spousal abuse, abandonment, economic hardship, and other relevant circumstances.
Applies federal tax laws, regulations, policies, procedures, interpretive guidance, and applicable court decisions to make legally supportable determinations, resolve complex and sensitive case issues, and determine appropriate adjustments to taxpayer accounts. A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
