Requirements & Education

In lieu of general/specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience: GS-5: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor degree. or A combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience.

The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent. GS-4: Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or related fields of study. or A combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

GS-3: Completed firefighter training that was obtained as part of a high school curriculum. or Completed one year of related education or firefighter training. or A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent. A transcript must be submitted with your application if qualifying using education.
