The Histopathology Technician (Advanced) serves as a Mohs/Micrographic Surgery Technician at the VA Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Histopathology Technician is responsible for receiving, documenting and processing the micrographic tissue specimens removed by the dermatologist by completing the frozen section staining procedures which enable a rapid diagnosis of the specimen.
Major Duties: Duties for the Histopathology Technician (Advanced) include but are not limited to: Prepares the micrographic area in preparation for the day's procedures. Assists in inventory and ordering of supplies and reagents for the section, keeping sufficient inventory to avoid emergent orders but not outdating reagents and ensuring that the cryostat is functional. Receives all specimens for Mohs procedures into the laboratory.
Verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request and proper sample submission. Performs cutting and preparation of the specimen mapping provided by the Dermatologist and understands proper orientation of each specimen. Responsible for cleaning the area and ensuring all equipment is operational always. Documents appropriate instrument maintenance and performs proper routine maintenance.
Assists in ensuring local and national policies and procedures, and federal agency regulations. Performs instrumentation and staining troubleshooting. Is responsible for changing solutions as required, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and documenting corrective action as needed.
