The Civil Investigator conducts difficult and complex investigations of violations of the False Claims Act, as well as other civil enforcement actions within the jurisdiction of the United States Attorney's Office. If selected, you will serve as an Investigator for the United States Attorney's Office - Western District of Kentucky.
The work involves independently planning and conducting complex investigations and/or financial examinations relating to civil actions and participating in investigative activities with Federal, State, and local officials.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Planning and conducting complex and difficult civil fraud cases/investigations, most often of a confidential nature, involving target organizations with complex organizational structures, ownership and financial relations, and a large number of primary and subsidiary activities.
Initiating contacts with federal, state and local officials and other organizations and individuals related to subject of investigation for the purpose of gathering facts, obtaining statements, learning sequences of events, obtaining explanations and otherwise advancing investigative objectives. Coordinating and organizing investigations with other federal or state agencies overseeing programs that receive federal funding to effectively prosecute civil enforcement actions.
This could include serving as a lead investigator in teams that may include investigators, auditors, and legal support staff from other law enforcement agencies. Conducting witnesses interviews and preparing reports of interviews. Developing and executing investigative plans. Performing complex quantitative, qualitative or other analysis of relevant facts.
Preparing investigative opinions requiring the use of considerable judgment and discretion to develop new ways and means for securing facts and evidence. Conducting extensive searches of files, records, and regulatory processes to find or obtain appropriate evidence for civil prosecution. Preparing fully documented reports which are self-explanatory and self-sustaining with inclusion of facts and recommendations for disposition of each matter investigated.
Analyzing data, reports and other sources to identify possible subjects for investigation. Conducting general surveillance activities.
