Job Summary

You will serve as a Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating) for Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. Open to the first 50 applicants or until 09/01/2026 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration. This is a temporary position expected to last one year but may be extended up to a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.

First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Key Responsibilities

Performs custodial duties for visitor center, other visitor facilities, vault toilet build, and collects trash. Provides grounds care operations by picking up litter, mowing, watering, aerating lawn, fertilizer application, herbicide application, and in winter months provides snow removal, clearing walkways, parking lots and roads.

Operates heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, brush chippers, portable snow blowers, and all types of hand and light power tools (such as shovels, Pulaski, picks, digging bars, rakes, lawn edging equipment, electric drills etc.), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc. Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.

Moves furniture, removes, and sets signs, paints picnic tables and signs, rakes and waters lawns, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up litter, cleans and repairs fire pits. Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; occasionally breaks up pavement, soil, or concrete; mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fills and levels holes in damaged roads. Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks.

Uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning, and oiling. Cuts trees and heavy vegetation with axe, chainsaw, or powered brush cutters; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc., or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort.

Operates vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads and city streets in all traffic conditions and performs minor operator maintenance on light duty motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to (10,000 pounds).

Vehicles are driven based on either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules and standard routes over public roads (or the equivalent) at highway speeds to transport personnel, supplies, materials, or equipment and tools, or to tow equipment throughout rural or urban areas. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is in Western South Dakota at exit 131 off Interstate 90. The Park has three separate units spread out along Interstate 90.

The first site is at exit 131, the park's visitor center, second site is Delat-01 Launch Control Facility at exit 127 and Delta-09 Launch Facility at exit 116. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site's purpose is to tell the story of Minuteman Missiles, nuclear deterrence and the Cold War. Delta-01 and Delta-09 are striking examples of the alert status of United States nuclear forces during this time period.

Park does not have housing units for rent. Local towns in the vicinity of Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, may have housing available to rent include Wall, Philip, Kadoka and Interior.

Rapid City, SD is 73 miles to the west and offers all the amenities of a larger city.
