Job Summary
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Office of Chief Counsel is seeking highly motivated current law students for its Legal Internship program. This program is specifically structured for Juris Doctor (J.D.) candidates looking to gain intensive, hands-on experience in federal administrative law, investigations and enforcement, and public safety.
Key Responsibilities
As a Legal Intern, you will be integrated directly into the day-to-day legal operations of our four core operational divisions. Legal Interns should expect to commit 20 hours per week at DOT's Headquarters in Washington, D.C. for the duration of their internship, either for an academic semester or a summer term.
Position: Law students currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school pursuing a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and have completed their 1L year at the time the internship would take place.
Typical duties of the interns may include: Performing legal research and/or assisting with research projects; Drafting legal documents including motions, pleadings, or briefs; Assist in trial preparations; Observe court proceedings; and In limited instances, may be allowed to represent the government in routine hearings under the supervision of an AUSA before various federal courts.
The primary goal of the program is to introduce interns to the federal legal system, to develop their legal skills and above all, to enjoy their overall internship experience. Applicants should expect to commit 20 hours per week at DOT's Headquarters in Washington, D.C. for the duration of their internship, either for an academic semester or a summer term.
While in-person attendance is strongly preferred, some remote flexibility may be offered.
