Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Key Responsibilities

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran.

This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. Major duties include but are not limited to: Will lead Transfusion Services and Urinalysis Department.

Possesses knowledge of medical technology applicable to a wide range of duties to solve complex problems involving diverse aspects of clinical laboratory practice. Provides day-to-day technical oversight of highly complex test performance. Manage and coordinate daily work activities and assignments in a section. Coordinates activities with the other sections in the laboratory to maintain the overall goals of all operations involved.

Evaluates laboratory effectiveness and performance; checks the technical accuracy of final results by reviewing completed reports and other data. Ensure current procedures are up to date. Provide orientation, training, and competency of employees (new and current) and students. Coordinate staff development. Develops materials for competency assessments, such as problem-solving items and samples for testing.

Analyze current workflows and process to identify areas that would benefit from process improvements. With approval of leadership, plan and coordinate the rollout of process improvements. Provides regular updates on QA progress. Oversight of quality control/assurance procedures on equipment, reagents, and products which includes implementation, monitoring, review, analyzing, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Attends all VISN or laboratory meetings as scheduled. If unable to attend, designates a back up or informs laboratory leadership. Reviews suggested resolutions of problems/incompatibilities to determine the most appropriate solution as required for situations.

Provides further guidance and technical direction to a wide variety of individuals to include, but not limited to, laboratory staff, providers, nurses, and other clinical staff regarding technical aspects of testing, specimen requirements, test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity as well as specific factors which may influence test results. Makes recommendations for major decisions as to the basic long-term operations and organization of the department.
