Job Summary

The incumbent serves as the Lead Motor Vehicle Operator and is responsible for supporting a full range of Transportation Office functions within the Phoenix Arizona VA Healthcare System's (PAVAHCS) in the Health Administration Service,

Key Responsibilities

Duties include but not limited to: Distribute and balance work distribution among employees. Check work progress and ensure timely completion of workload. Estimate and provide reports to supervisor on expected time of completion of workload; maintain records of work accomplishments. Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provide written instruction and materials/supplies.

Give on-the-job training to new employees; inform them of established work standards. Perform the driving duties and related services operating several types of and classes of motor vehicles including buses, trucks, vans, patient transport vehicles such as ambulances and wheelchair buses, passenger and shuttle vans which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds.

Provide non-emergent, safe, reliable transportation of eligible veterans and cargo, operates and provides preventive maintenance checks and services for patient transport vehicles. First contact with the veterans and is responsible for making the first positive impression. Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day.

Providing the VTS program office a list of veterans who arrived at the Phoenix VA Health Care System via the VTS transportation vehicles. Ensure only eligible veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations. Transport patients (wheelchair, gurneys and ambulatory) beneficiaries and materials essential to patient care.

Related service included on-off-loading vehicles, pick-up, patient assistance, ridership metric, first echelon vehicle preventive maintenance and checks and services. Be familiar with the medical equipment in the vehicle and can quickly locate such equipment for accompanying medical technicians. Must be skilled in transferring empty oxygen tanks for full ones, reading gauges and regulators oxygen flow for patients transported requiring this service.

Skill in driving the vehicle in various road conditions to safely transport patients to their destination and know how to properly load and secure wheelchair patients in the vehicle. Must have knowledge of vehicles equipped with special-purpose accessory equipment. Know how to use the power devices that operate van lifts and skill in manipulating a variety of controls and understanding equipment gauges, engine fluid level instruments and warning signals.

Must possess mechanical abilities in determining nature of breakdowns, tire change or repair, etc., enabling the vehicle to be driven to the nearest repair shop or summoning help via available communications systems.
