Job Summary

This Materials Handler-MVO position is within Facilities Management as the senior materials handler applying in-depth knowledge of material handling, movement, and storage; responsible for receipt and storage of office furniture, door frames, steel studs, and other supplies. Incumbent also transports patients (including wheelchair patients) between medical centers and specials events; and fills in as needed as a driver in the Motor pool. Duty location: VA Medical Center, Richmond, VA.

Major Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Directs and guides the work of lower-level workers as well as making determinations as to placement, unloading, timing, and general movement of materials within assigned areas. Develops plans for storage and arrangement of stock items. Coordinates and facilitates the movement of materials and items in accordance with priorities, scheduling requirement, and space allocations. Coordinates receiving and placement of materials (general supplies, boxes, furniture items, high value items/equipment). Determines the sequences of loading and unloading, developing space utilization plans, and implementing the movement of materials from dock to bin or from storage to shipping. Develops plans for storage and arrangement of stock items. Applies defensive driving techniques including skill to recognize developing hazardous road and traffic conditions and the judgment to select alternate routes to avoid potential problems. Operates a motor vehicle to transport patients (including wheelchair patients) between medical centers and special events; and fills in as needed as a driver in the Motor Pool. Operates wheelchair vans with gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds, but not to exceed 26,000 pounds. Operates forklift to safely move large items. Operates pallet jack to safely move large items. Completes trip tickets, preventive maintenance records, accident reports and must be able to perform all preventive basic maintenance tasks, such as checking all fluid levels, lights. tires, batteries, tools and be able to make minor emergency repairs as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
