This position performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services). This position is located within the VA Ann Arbor Medical Center location. In support of emergency room, acute care or urgent care clinic, or other similar departments performing basic and advanced life support procedures.
The major duties include but are not limited to: Paramedic Duties The Paramedic responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening. Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance. Paramedics shall perform patient triage and take/records patient's vital signs as needed.
Paramedics perform physical examinations and obtains patient history, assesses status of patient's neurological system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills, and level of consciousness.
Paramedics shall have broad knowledge and skills sufficient to provide and gather information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting and goals for the assigned patient for the purpose of communicating with the patients and nursing/medical staff members.
The Paramedic makes an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols the one that is considered appropriate under the given circumstances. The Paramedic determines, with due regard to the condition, if and how the patient can be moved and to which medical facility the patient should be transported.
The Paramedic prioritizes treatments for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of advanced emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment during transport to the appropriate medical facility.
The Paramedic administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), international trauma life support (ITLS), PALS, PEPP, advanced airway management, CPR, and/or drug treatments.
Performs invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life-threatening conditions per established procedures or as authorized/directed by physicians. Responds to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, performs cardiac monitoring and defibrillation; maintains circulation controls bleeding and provides spinal management and immobilization.
The Paramedic provides fluid resuscitation by IV and manages trauma injuries, bleeding, and post-traumatic shock. Assists with children and administers medications as appropriate. Observes records, and monitors patient's condition and effects of medication, and performs rapid sequence intubation according to established medical standards. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Takes appropriate measures to prevent disease transmission or exposure to bodily fluids. Ambulance/Transport Vehicle Operation The Paramedic selects the most efficient route to and from sites, taking into consideration traffic patterns, health facility locations, etc. Paramedic operates the emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems.
Paramedics shall have skills and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics to safely operate the vehicle under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions to provide emergency and patient transportation. Paramedics shall have skills to read highway maps, program GPS devices, read and follow instructions in order to locate and complete assigned tasks.
The Paramedic adheres to traffic ordinances and regulations pertaining to operation of emergency vehicles. Paramedics prepare appropriate patient and vehicle use documentation and reports to ensure medical requirements are met. After each trip, replaces linens, blankets, and other supplies; sends supplies and equipment for sterilization, and ensures vehicle is ready for the next run.
Performs thorough safety and operator maintenance inspections and makes minor repairs on a variety of emergency ambulances, patient transport vehicles, and medical equipment. The Paramedic ensures that the vehicles are kept clean and neat. Paramedics will decontaminate the vehicle in accordance with Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) established procedures.
Utilizes various tools and equipment, some of which are specialized emergency medical equipment such as Henley backboards, EKG monitor and defibrillator, mechanical CPR device, etc. Performs other duties as necessary.
