The Medical Instrument Technician Gastroenterology (GI) Technician assists the physician and Registered Nurse in the Endoscopy Suite. The technician maintains a high level of knowledge regarding endoscopic instruments, patient monitoring equipment, patient positioning and comfort, peripheral venous access, and proper handling of specimens.

After meeting pre-employment requirements, candidates will receive a final job offer and start date. Onboarding tasks may continue after starting, with HR ensuring timely completion for a smooth transition into VA service. If selected, applicants should be prepared to come onboard within 30 days of the announcement closing.
Duties Include but are not limited to the following: Technicians at this level function with minimal instruction, assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique.
They collect, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases. The Gastroenterology Technician maintains competency on the proper handling, pre-procedure inspection, set-up, and post-procedure pre-cleaning of each endoscope that may potentially be used.
Trains others to do the same and assists the physician to troubleshoot instrument problems. He or she recognizes potential and actual problems with the function of the endoscopes and reports issues to the Sterile Processing Service. The Gastroenterology Technician properly positions and drapes the patient to facilitate intubation and promote the comfort, safety and dignity of the patient.
The technician uses good body mechanics and safe lift techniques when assisting the patient with movement. Communicates with the Medical Support Assistant(s) and Registered Nurse(s) to ensure timely intake of patients arriving for procedures. He/she obtains a full set of vital signs, completes the pre-procedure check list with the patient, assists the patient to change into a gown, if necessary, per order or protocol.
Gastroenterology Technician assists in the collection, fixation, labeling, and transport to the laboratory of specimens obtained during the endoscopic process. Performs other duties as assigned.
