Job Summary

The Medical Record Technician (Coder) will work in the Health Information Management Section (HIMS) of the Medical Administration Service (MAS). Two vacancies available at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center as well as the Jacksonville VA North Clinic and will be responsible for performing a quality review of patient care documents and assigning codes specific for the type of care provided.

Major Duties

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Assign diagnosis and procedure codes to the most basic and routine inpatient admissions and outpatient encounters. Develop skill and knowledge of medical record coding. Has basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and pathophysiology. Learn to select diagnosis and/or procedure codes based on the accepted coding practices, guidelines, conventions and policies with guidance from a senior coder or supervisor. Identifies the principal diagnosis and/or principal procedure for every inpatient admission. Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate code to ensure ethical, accurate, and complete coding. Reviews medical record documentation to abstract all relevant clinical, demographic, social, and administrative data with guidance and instruction from supervisor or senior coder. Assist in orienting and instructing new personnel and/or students from affiliated health information or medical record technology programs with the direction of the supervisor. Work within a team environment, supporting peers, handle multiple tasks, meet goals, and work with frequently changing projects and deadlines. Utilize advanced knowledge of encoder software and use a variety of Windows based applications in day to day activities and duties, such as Outlook, Excel, and Word. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 8am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: 3 plus days per pay period.
