This Medical Records Technician (Coder-Outpatient and Inpatient) position is in Business Office services at the VA Bedford Healthcare System, located at the Bedford location. This position is full time at 40 hours per week.
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Medical Record Technicians (MRT) are skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in the hospital setting, and/or physician-based settings, such as physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialty centers. These coding practitioners analyze and abstract patients' health records and assign alpha-numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure.
To perform this task, they must possess expertise in International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). MRT (Coder) may also provide education related to coding and documentation.
Major Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs a comprehensive review of the patient health record to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data to ensure complete data capture. Corrects any identified data errors or inconsistencies in a timely manner to ensure acceptance in the national VA database within established timelines.
Directly consults with the professional staff for clarification of conflicting or ambiguous clinical data. Ensures provider documentation is complete and supports the diagnoses and procedures coded. Utilizes the facility computer system and software applications to correctly code, abstract, record, and transmit data to the national VA database.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm Remote: This position is being filled as remote (i.e., the employee will not work at a VA Facility or VA-Leased space). Telework: Not Aurthorized. Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Notifications: This position is covered by locality-based comparability pay. Veterans' preference does not apply for internal or other current permanent Federal agency employees.
Narrative responses to the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) may be required from the selectee in order to proceed with the appointment. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
Virtual/Remote Work Status: This position is eligible for Remote/Virtual work. However, this position may fall under the Presidential Memorandum titled "Return to In-Person Work" which requires you to go into the office. GS-08 Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. AND, In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to analyze the health record to identify all pertinent diagnoses and procedures for coding and to evaluate the adequacy of the documentation.
This includes the ability to read and understand the content of the health record, the terminology, the significance of the comments, and the disease process/pathophysiology of the patient.
Ability to accurately perform the full scope of outpatient coding, including ambulatory surgical cases, diagnostic studies and procedures, and outpatient encounters, and inpatient facility coding, including inpatient discharges, surgical cases, diagnostic studies and procedures, and inpatient professional services.
Skill in interpreting and adapting health information guidelines that are not completely applicable to the work, or have gaps in specificity, and the ability to use judgment in completing assignments using incomplete or inadequate guidelines. Preferred Experience: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) medical coding certification, and work experience coding in a healthcare setting.

The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS 04 to GS 08.Physical Requirements: Office setting; moderate lifting and carrying, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, and periods of standing/sitting.
