This position is located in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (PLMS) within the Orlando Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System at the VA Viera Clinic in Viera, FL.
***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs specimen collection, examination, receipt, processing, and shipment procedures as well as phlebotomy in an inpatient and outpatient setting. Reviews requests for laboratory testing to verify the accuracy and completeness of the order. Assesses specimen integrity for correct tube type; adequate sample volume; correct storage and shipping environment; sample is free of contaminants such as abnormal lipids (fats), high level of bilirubin present; or high level of red blood cells. Assesses patient for the most appropriate venipuncture location; prepares the site using sterile techniques; performs collection and receipt of specimens; assures integrity of specimens received; and prepares and processes specimens and the transports specimens throughout the healthcare system and to reference laboratories. Reviews test request orders prior to collecting specimens, determining whether the patient has been properly prepared for the test (fasting, special diet, medication, etc.). Manages patient care during adverse events, provides initial aid when a patient has a reaction to administering materials or procedures, and may call code when serious reaction or emergency conditions exist. Identifies unusual test results or discrepancies/conditions that can be erroneous results (instrument malfunction, conditions of test performance, reaction systems, specimen integrity, and/or test procedures) and takes appropriate action to make corrections and solve problems. Performs collection of urine for random drug screenings or "for cause." Ensures all specimens are collected correctly, at the correct times, in proper containers, with correct preservative and anticoagulants, at the correct temperatures and from a properly prepared patient. Ensures all specimens are properly labeled and identified throughout the entire specimen process to maintain specimen integrity. Performs other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm or 8:00am - 4:30pm. May include extended hours based on the service needs.
