Job Summary

The Motor Vehicle Operator safely transports Veterans, staff, supplies, and equipment throughout the Orlando VA Health Care System using 30-passenger buses, 11-passenger vans, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, sedans, cargo vans, and trucks up to 26,500 pounds. The position performs thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections, monitors vehicle condition during use, and reports any safety or maintenance issues to ensure reliable, mission-ready transportation.

Key Responsibilities

The operator assists passengers with mobility limitations and completes all required transport documentation accurately while supporting multi-site operations. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Operates 30-passenger buses, 11-passenger vans, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, sedans, cargo vans, and trucks up to 26,500 pounds on predetermined and scheduled routes as well as special assignments.

Receives trip assignments, routing instructions, and procedural guidance from the WS-7 Maintenance Supervisor or the GS-7 Transportation Assistant. Arrives and departs from pickup and discharge points according to schedule and adjusts routes based on road, traffic, and weather conditions to ensure safe and efficient travel. Reads installation maps, evaluates road conditions, and determines the safest and most efficient routes.

Enforces passenger safety requirements, including proper use of seatbelts and mobility-assistance equipment. Uses Mobile Data Computers (MDCs), trip management systems, and related technology to complete assigned transportation duties. Loads and unloads patients, medical equipment, and supplies, ensuring safe handling and proper use of accessibility and restraint equipment.

Performs operator-level maintenance, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and safety equipment; cleaning vehicles; and completing required inspection checklists. Maintains accurate records such as operator inspection forms, trip documentation, and accident/incident reports. Utilizes two-way radios or other communication devices to maintain continuous contact with dispatch or supervisory staff.

Maintains a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement as required for the position. Performs other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 4:00 AM- 12:30PM, 5:00 AM- 1:30PM, 6:00 AM- 2:30PM, 7:00 AM 3:30PM, 7:30 AM- 4:00PM, 8:00 AM- 4:30 PM, 9:30 AM- 6:00PM, 11:30AM-8:00PM *Note-Exact TOD for this position will be discussed during the interview and may be adjusted to meet the facility/dept needs.
