The Surgical Scheduler Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients and families in the nursing care area. He/She is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice, The Surgical Scheduler Nurse demonstrates leadership when providing and improving patient care: The Surgical Scheduler Registered Nurse serves as a role model when functioning as a team member under the supervision of the Perioperative Nurse Manager.
The Surgical Scheduler Registered Nurse reports to the Perioperative Nurse Manager. The Surgical Scheduler RN coordinates multiple internal and external phases of development of the Surgery Schedule daily. This is a complex process requiring in-depth review of request, alignment of procedure times based on historical case statistics, coordination of request for equipment and supplies with Sterile Processing (SPS).
Receives surgery requests from surgeons on all services requesting procedure time in the Operating Room. Allocates surgery days and number of rooms based on the operating room utilization plan for block times. The Surgical Scheduler Nurse knowledgeably evaluates all request for surgery to ensure realistic number of cases and lengths of procedure times are allocated for space and time by service.
Take appropriate procedural action, in conjunction with the Chief of Surgery, Chief of Anesthesia and the Perioperative Chief Nurse and Nurse Manager when allocations are exceeded. Works collaboratively with OR Implant Coordinator to obtain and assure all implants and prosthesis are ready for day of surgery. The Surgical Scheduler Nurse works as a team with other surgical professionals to plan and discuss each procedure as needed.
The Surgical Nurse Scheduler assures that the patient is placed on the surgery schedule after they are fully optimized.
