Job Summary

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is looking for a Nursing Assistant who serves as a member of the nursing team on a rotating, day evening and/or night tour. The applicant will give direct patient care to patients who may require medical and/or psychiatric nursing care under the indirect supervision of the registered nurse.

Key Responsibilities

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center (CVAMC) is a two-division campus located in Cincinnati, OH and Fort Thomas, KY serving 15 counties in Southwest OH, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Bellevue, KY; Florence, KY; Lawrenceburg, IN; Hamilton, OH; Clermont County, OH, and Georgetown, OH.

The CVAMC also supports two off main campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and Mental Health Outreach Community Division. Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties: Maintains a positive therapeutic relationship by displaying respect for human dignity with patients, families and/or significant others utilizing learned communication skills.

Begins to utilize observation skills for data collection, reporting and recording patient/resident observations. Learns to perform aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following under close supervision and with direction/guidance from a preceptor.: a. Personal Hygiene b. Physical comfort c. Activity, Exercise, Rest d. Nutrition e. Elimination f. Prevention of Skin Breakdown g. Rehabilitative Aspects of Care.

Reports patient observations to the RN and/or other members of the treatment team. Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment. Assists with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies.

Utilizes principles of proper body mechanics and follows procedures for use of patient care equipment to prevent injury; Sets up patient care related equipment, such as hypothermia machines, oxygen delivery systems, portable and wall suction and assisting in monitoring proper functioning of equipment. Completes all mandatory training within appropriate timelines. Actively participates in annual competency assessment and validation.

Reports patient status to the RN and documents pertinent observations in the medical record according to established procedures. Makes observations of subtle changes in resident's condition, i.e. behavior shifts, mood, skin coloring, appetite, etc. and takes action accordingly within the NA's assigned role. Responds appropriately to subtle patient changes by contacting the appropriate nursing personal.

Works on small group activities with veterans/residents according to the patients/resident treatment plan. Completes all mandatory training within appropriate timelines. Actively participates in annual competency assessment and validation. Serves as the unit safe patient handling liaison. Serves as preceptor and mentor to other NAs. Recognizes the residents' autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting and individualized treatment.

Work Schedule: Varies, rotating weekends and holidays, hiring manager will discuss this with appointed applicant. Recruitment/Relocation Incentives (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
