Job Summary

The primary function of the Occupational Therapist is to provide direct patient care. This position is located at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical center in Clarksburg, WV. The Occupational Therapist will independently develop and implement an Occupational Therapy Treatment program utilizing judgment to modify the treatment as a result of changing medical conditions or because of a variety of severe physical and mental disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Major Duties as outlined for both GS 11 and GS 12: Duties involve working with patients in the areas of general medicine, surgery, pulmonary, orthopedics, extended/long term care, psychiatry, ambulatory care and acute care. Gathers pre-evaluation data, interprets medical record information, and reviews therapy prescriptions to develop and implement a treatment plan. Plans and implements the Occupational Therapy Program as required.

Administration of treatment requires frequent decision making and program changes because of work demand, personnel changes and patient priorities. Consistently screens patient evaluations and prescribes treatment for appropriateness, reporting any contra-indications to the Occupational Therapy Supervisor. Monitors patient attendance/progress and reports appropriate recommendations and treatment revisions to primary physician and other staff.

Periodically reviews patient's goals and functional abilities of patients referred for Occupational Therapy. Frequently selects and recommends orthotic assistive devices, and instructs the patient or caretaker in the proper use, application and care of such devices. CLINICAL Works effectively with treatment team members, patients, patients' family/significant others, and other health care providers in coordinating the patient's total care.

Effectively communicates in the clinical medical record and other written and /or oral sources to promote positive communication, collaboration and teamwork. Uses standard and non-standard methods and techniques for evaluating and interpreting a wide variety of patient physical and psychosocial functional levels and for providing progressive treatment.

Conducts comprehensive patient examinations to identify rehabilitation problems and establish treatment goals utilizing the most recent evidence based Occupational Therapy practice. Conducts examinations, treatment planning and interventions, documentation, and follow-up evaluations. Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) Responsible for knowing what reusable instruments, equipment, medical devices or supplies are used (inventory).

Responsible to follow the local Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) drafted in accordance with the manufacturer's written recommendations. Administrative Establishes communication systems and operational practices that promote efficient and effective enterprise. There is evidence of team building, total quality improvement activities, and employee issue resolution.

Demonstrates active improvement in close coordination, collaboration and consultation with physicians, peers and other health care professionals in planning new or extended services appropriate for the medical center. Systematically assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of Occupational Therapy services and designs and implements processes to support quality service delivery.
