This position is located at the Daniel Akaka VA Clinic in Kapolei, HI. Staff Optometrists collaborate with Ophthalmology and other interdisciplinary teams. Administrative reporting follows VAPIHCS service line structures.

Work Schedule: 7:30am - 4:00pm, Monday -Friday Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Optometrists provide comprehensive eye and vision care, including the following core services: Comprehensive eye examinations (visual acuity, refraction, binocular vision, color vision, intraocular pressure, dilated fundus evaluation).
Diagnostic testing using approved instruments and pharmaceutical agents to evaluate ocular disease and visual function. Analysis of test results and development of individualized treatment plans. Prescription, fitting, and adjustment of eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids. Patient education and counseling on contact lens care, visual hygiene, ergonomics/lighting, and eye safety.
Foreign body removal from the ocular surface when clinically indicated and within privileges. Pre- and post-operative care for ocular surgeries (e.g., cataract, laser vision correction) in collaboration with Ophthalmology. Prescription of therapeutic procedures and vision rehabilitation to conserve or improve visual function. Consult and refer to Ophthalmology or other disciplines when additional medical/surgical treatment is required.
Establish co-management plans with Ophthalmology for surgical cases and chronic disease management (e.g., glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy). Utilize VA referral pathways and document rationale, urgency, and expected follow-up intervals. Provide same-day triage and management of urgent ocular complaints (e.g., acute red eye, vision loss, ocular trauma) within scope and privileges; arrange emergent care when indicated.
Operate and interpret findings from approved diagnostic devices (e.g., slit-lamp biomicroscopy, tonometry, pachymetry, automated perimetry, OCT, fundus photography) per training and privileges; ensure calibration and adherence to device-specific safety protocols. Utilize the VA electronic health record (EHR) for accurate, timely documentation of encounters, orders, and patient communications.
Use standardized optometry templates and include history, assessment, plan, patient education, and follow-up. Ensure coding compliance and appropriate encounter closures. Participate in performance improvement initiatives and quality metrics (e.g., diabetic eye exam completion, glaucoma follow-up adherence). Practice in accordance with evidence-based guidelines and VA directives; engage in peer review and case discussions.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
