Job Summary

The Painter position supports the Engineering Service's Maintenance and Operations Section at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, performing skilled interior and exterior painting, signage fabrication, flooring installation, and drywall finishing with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include; but are not limited to: Prepare interior and exterior surfaces by scraping, sanding, sandblasting, filling, shaping, and leveling materials. Mix and apply paints, coatings, pre-coating agents, special finishes, and tint colors to match existing specifications. Paint a variety of surfaces including walls, ceilings, floors, structures, equipment, woodwork, roofs, and fencing using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.

Install and finish drywall, prepare surfaces for flooring, and install carpet tile, VCT tile, vinyl wall coverings, and protective materials. Create, design, fabricate, and install signage using computer programs, sign-making equipment, and precise measurement tools. Calculate material and supply needs by accurately measuring work areas and estimating required paint, coverings, or flooring.

Set up and work from ladders, scaffolding, and swinging stages, including exterior work above two stories. Work independently with minimal supervision, completing assignments to meet trade standards and facility requirements. Follow all safety rules, regulations, and proper workmanship practices to prevent injury and ensure a safe work environment. Provide courteous and professional customer service to veterans, visitors, and staff.

Protect sensitive printed and electronic information in accordance with Privacy Act and VA policy. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Painter/PD09945A Physical Requirements: The work requires sustained physical effort, including scraping, sanding, cleaning, and painting surfaces-often overhead.

The incumbent must stand, sit, bend, kneel, and squat for extended periods, climb ladders and scaffolding, and lift, carry, and position materials and equipment up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds or more occasionally. Work may occur in confined or elevated spaces and requires manual dexterity and full use of hands, arms, and shoulders.
