If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team as a Paralegal Specialist responsible for providing a wide range of legal support services to Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Western District of Michigan (WDMI) involved in criminal and civil prosecutions associated with financial litigation.
Assignments relate to the enforcement of criminal monetary judgments, including recovery of restitution owed to victims of federal crimes, and enforcement of monetary judgments arising from affirmative civil enforcement matters and civil cases referred by various agencies.
Typical work assignments will include: Preparing a variety of substantive legal documents to include various motions, foreclosures, garnishments, and other legal actions to effect necessary post-judgment action regarding debts owed to the U.S. government. Conducting interviews of debtors, employers, and agency officials to determine the effectiveness of pursuing legal action against debtors in default.
Investigating, reviewing, and summarizing the financial situation of a debtor and making a recommendation on the most appropriate legal action both pre and post-judgment. Processing debt collection claims referred from client agencies and debts that arise by way of criminal or civil judgment.
Assignments embrace the full scope of collection activities from the initial review of claims and judgments to making independent determinations as to the cost-effectiveness of pursuing the obligation by way of suit or proceedings subsequent to the entry of judgement to enforce collection.
Monitoring the progress of pending cases and initiating action to ensure that legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, and other documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines. Performing a variety of ancillary support relating to financial litigation actions, such as developing/implementing procedures, participating in special/recurring projects, and reviewing databases and automated tracking systems.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
