The Pharmacy Technician (Inpatient Controlled Substances) is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and managing all controlled substances within inpatient pharmacy. The incumbent performs the program coordination in the Controlled Substance Program, which requires detailed regulatory oversight and record keeping. Mandated accountability and control of scheduled drugs make this a sensitive position that is considered critical by all levels of management.

Effectively coordinates, manages, completes, and documents the ordering of all controlled substances prescriptions and medication orders through pharmacy procurement personnel by maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. Accurately fills all AMSDDs and participates in quality assurance audits (e.g., recalls, expiration dates, quantity corrections, and bin assignment/un-assignment).
The process will include pulling medications from the main central pharmacy area, maintaining accurate inventory, completing and filing reports, loading medications into individual dispensing units in patient care areas and clinics, and troubleshooting automation problems. Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdated controlled substances from stock, including inpatient wards, inpatient storage cabinets, and vaults.
Maintains appropriate inventory and par levels of all medications and supplies in the inpatient pharmacy areas. Evaluates, analyzes, and coordinates controlled substances dispensing workflow and work activities within the Medical Center. Maintains the security of controlled substances by controlling access to storage areas and ensuring that they are always kept in the locked, supervised areas designated for controlled substance storage.
Assists with repacking medication if unit dose formulation is not available in accordance with the VA directives and other regulatory agents' guidelines. Resolves controlled substances inventory discrepancies and implements corrective actions immediately when discovered by reviewing reports and contacting appropriate persons when needed.
Support controlled sterile preparations when needed, the incumbent will demonstrate competencies in compounding procedures and sterile technique through actual work performance and successfully completes all required sterile compounding competencies and certifications about sterile compounding, appropriate gowning, and cleaning procedures. Actively participates in the Daily Management System (DMS).
Reports on performance improvement activities' progress, monitor metrics and participates in departmental meetings.
