Job Summary

The Pharmacy Controlled Substance/Automation Technician is certified, highly specialized technician and is responsible for the first line management of all controlled substances handled by the pharmacy for the assigned area.

Key Responsibilities

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional This position requires thorough knowledge and understanding of federal, VA, and facility regulations regarding controlled substances and pharmacy processes in general and involves performing complex procedures over a range of functions. The incumbent will consistently demonstrate independent technical judgement and comprehensive and thorough knowledge of associated VA policies and procedures.

Duties of this position include but are not limited to coordination, evaluation, workflow and performance improvement for automated dispensing machines and all services involving receipt, storage, fill, dispense, transfer, inventory, administration, waste, or destruction of controlled substances per Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Handbooks and Directives, as well as all Office of Inspector General (OIG) Directives and Health System Policy.

The incumbent must be highly organized and demonstrate a concerned and critical attitude toward accuracy, detail, control, and loss management and function with minimal supervision. In addition to working in the pharmacy vault, responsibilities include but are not limited to: Prepare, fill, and dispense controlled substance according to policies and procedures. Conducts regularly scheduled inventories every 72 hours and daily if needed according to regulations and policies.

Assists the Controlled Substance Compliance Inspectors to complete the monthly inspections. Coordinates, manages, completes, and documents the purchasing of all prescription and non-prescription drug products and supplies. Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdated CS medications from stock including inpatient wards, inpatient/outpatient storage cabinets, vaults.

Maintains accurate electronic inventory through decrementing prescriptions, entering received inventory, transferring to automated dispensing cabinets, dispensing on green sheets, and transferring to other dispensing vaults. Coordinates the technical aspects of pharmacy drug distribution activities to ensure standard operating procedures are aligned with automation capabilities so that efficiencies are maximized.

Evaluates and analyzes workflow and coordinates all work activities involved with Pharmacy automation. Trains and orients pharmacy staff, and other medical center staff involved in operating the automation. Provides data for workload reports and process improvement projects to appropriate supervisors. Performs duties of all lower grade technicians as needed.

Work Schedule: 8hr Shifts between 5:30am - 6:00pm with rotating WHEN hours Recruitment/Relocation Incentives (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
