This position is located within the Physical Therapy Department of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) at the Greater Los Angeles Health Care System in Los Angeles, California. The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) is responsible for delivering therapeutic interventions designed to prevent, alleviate, and rehabilitate acute and chronic physical and psychosocial impairments.
Develop, deliver, and oversee clinical training experiences for Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) students. Independently provides education to patients and their caregivers, following the completion of an evaluation by a licensed physical therapist. Receives and interprets treatment requests or procedural instructions from a physical therapist or physician.
Under the general supervision of a physical therapist, plans and administers specialized treatment programs and applies designated physical therapy procedures. May also perform or direct the work of lower-graded assistants, as necessary, to ensure the timely and effective completion of assigned tasks. Conducts a preliminary review of the patient's medical record, including relevant medical history, and compiles and organizes pertinent clinical information.
This information is then synthesized into a patient profile that supports the assessment of the patient's current status and safety prior to each treatment session. Assists with, or administers, a course of treatment based on the patient's assessed needs and develops progressive physical therapy treatment plans in consultation with a physical therapist or physician.
Prepares and delivers written, oral, and data-driven reports for the unit physician, physiatrist, nursing staff, fellow therapists, and other professionals involved in the patient's care. Maintains a safe and orderly work environment by performing non-technical equipment maintenance, conducting routine safety checks, and ensuring proper cleaning and stocking of treatment areas and supplies.
Assists the physical therapist in conducting quality improvement activities within the service. Maintains and enhances professional competency by updating their knowledge of current trends and best practices in physical therapy through participation in continuing education courses.
