Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Key Responsibilities

The staff Anesthesiologist is accountable to Chief, Anesthesiology, to provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the medical center in compliance with VA and VHA Directives and The Joint Commission accreditation standards The duties and responsibilities of the Anesthesiologist include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for all aspects of medical care and provide or assist residents and/or the mid-level practitioner in the process of evaluation and treatment of the patients who require Anesthesia Evaluate the patient to assess changes in physical and mental status.

A progress note is written in the patient's chart. Notes also include the concurrence of notes written by the resident and mid-level, as appropriate. Coordinating with providers within and outside of their own Service Line, and with other VHA facilities or community providers as determined by the plan of care for the veteran.

Ensuring that barriers for Veterans and staff are minimized to promote a positive work environment, and foster positive working relationships with staff, peers and Veterans. Expected to share on-call responsibilities with other anesthesiologists Assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia including pre-operative patient exam and assessment.

Provision of insensibility to pain during surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures and the management of patients so affected. Monitoring and restoration of homeostasis during the perioperative period, as well as homeostasis in the critically ill, injured, or otherwise seriously ill patient. Diagnosis and treatment of painful syndromes. Clinical management and teaching cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.

Evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy in all its forms. Supervision, teaching, and evaluation of performance of both medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory, and critical care. Administrative involvement in hospitals, medical schools, and outpatient facilities necessary for implementation of these responsibilities. Providing anesthesia services at all locations VA Boston performs surgeries/procedures.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
