The Emergency Care Service Line (EMSL) Physician Assistant practices general emergency medicine, which has a vast scope of practice. Services offered will include the provision of appropriate medical treatment and management of general medical problems of adult patients in an emergency medicine setting(s). Conditions requiring further specialty care will be referred to specialty clinics within the VA system or to Community Care resources.
VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. A board- certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) provides duties and responsibilities for patients being seen and evaluated in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care locations. Services will be needed seven days a week and 24 hours a day. This may include Federal holidays. They utilize advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in decision-making and evaluating outcomes.
They function as experts in clinical practice and/or in areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, may serve as mentors for transitioning PAs, and may provide training for health care students. The incumbent must be able to satisfactorily carry out any duty of a Physician Assistant, and perform the following: Duties and Responsibilities: 1.
PAs at this level should be able to demonstrate, develop, or acquire KSAs listed below to qualify for the appointment for PA-I-III: a. Ability to clinically evaluate facility patient care delivery systems and validate or identify barriers to safe and effective patient care. b.
Skill to consistently demonstrate and elevated level of expertise and autonomy in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients through facility Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE). c. Ability to present clinical findings and recommendations to appropriate management officials. d.
Ability to implement and initiate clinical changes to established treatment protocols based upon new medical literature research findings to enhance patient delivery care for improved patient outcomes. e. Ability to participate clinically in the development of the PA patient care audit processes involving in-depth review and analysis of medical records. 2.
Treatment and professional directives as outlined in the privileges and as noted in the credentialing process, some of which are listed below: a. Primary evaluation of applicants for care at the VA Health Systems facilities including history and physical examination, ordering of pertinent laboratory and radiology tests, and initial diagnosis and disposition of these patients. b.
Obtain appropriate consultation from on-call specialists and communicate pertinent medical information to other health care providers/institutions. c. Enter all reports for incorporation into the computerized patient record system (CPRS) on the day of the visit and satisfy VHA and medical center policies and Joint Commission requirements for documentation. The PA must possess computer skills to access CPRS utilized by the VA. Orientation to CPRS will be provided by the VA. d.
Prescribe medications for patients according to the established drug formulary at this facility. Variance from the formulary should occur only when clinically indicated and compliance with the procedures established. e. Any administrative requirement for referral and/or transfer to another medical facility will be completed by VA personnel and approved by the ACOS/Emergency Medicine Chief of Staff, or designee prior to transfer. f.
Perform services within VA policies, procedures, and the regulations of the medical staff by-laws of the VA facility. g. The PA will also perform administrative duties such as quality assurance, peer reviews, serving on various committees as directed by the ACOS/EM or Administration. The PA may also participate in the instruction of medical and allied health care students assigned to Emergency Medicine Service Line. The PA will also perform other related duties as assigned.
Reviewed May 2026 3. The ACOS/Emergency Medicine is responsible for the overall clinical and administrative function of the Emergency Medicine Service Line. 4. Additional Functions: a. Staff PAs provide or assist other specialists in the process of evaluation and treatment of the psychiatric patient and actively participate in corrective actions against untoward responses to psychiatric interventions. b.
Staff PAs evaluate the patient to assess changes in the patient's physical and mental status. A progress note is written in the patient's chart using CPRS. c. Staff PAs are appropriately credentialed and privileged and may participate in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital. d.
The PA may initiate Advanced Cardiac Life Support in accordance with current ACLS protocols, to include defibrillation/cardioversion in life threatening situations, if ACLS certified.
