This Physician Assistant (PA) in the Mental Health Service Line shall provide clinical services for mental health patients at the Salem VA Medical Center, Mental Health Clinic in Salem, Virginia. The PA is authorized to perform any duties delegated to them by their supervising physician that the PA is credentialed, licensed, and trained to perform and as specified in the Scope of Practice.
The Physician Assistant shall perform services under the direction of the psychiatrist and the Chief, Mental Health Service Line. Duties include but are not limited to: Work includes performing mental health intakes for patients new to mental health, including appropriate suicide assessments, safety screening, and medication reconciliations. Ordering and interpreting appropriate lab, x-ray, and special studies. Establishing a working diagnosis based upon acquired data and developing a treatment plan in accordance with current practice. Implement therapeutic intervention and provide appropriate follow-up care. Exercise judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising psychiatrist or other healthcare professionals. Identifies medical ethical issues and takes appropriate actions. Supports and enhances patient self-determination. Collaborates effectively with other occupations and services to identify, analyze, and resolve mental health problems. Shares medical literature research findings with colleagues to enhance patient care delivery. Uses a body of research to validate or change group practice.
