Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program EDRP, a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief of Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC) will report to the Chief of Staff. Chief, GEC has overall responsibility for community Living Center, Green House Homes, Home Based Primary Care and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitative Services at the VA Illiana Health Care system. The Chief, GEC works with considerable independence, assuming complete responsibility for a full range of treatment programs.

Maintain minimum of 20 percent to 50 percent clinical responsibility and the remaining time will be for administrative duties as determined by the Chief of Staff. Duties include: Supervise and coordinate operations of the Geriatrics & Extended Care Service and rehabilitation services. Arrange and communicate to appropriate staff the availability of staff physicians and coverage for sick and annual leave and during non-administrative hours.

Coordinate the screening and admission of patients to all G&ECS programs and emergency treatment and transfer procedures. Develop policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure adequate and comprehensive services and communicate these to staff physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistant, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, shabazims and other G&ECS staff.

Coordinate use of resources, including space, supplies, and to some degree, staffing, in both direct patient care and support of health care delivery. Serve as a member of the Medical Center Clinical Executive Board, Medical Staff and communicating medical staff responsibilities and helping assure adherence of G&ECS physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to the bylaws, rules, and regulations.

Make credentialing and privileging recommendations for physicians and LIPs and ensure other health care professionals involved in the care of long term care patients practice within the scope of their licenses. Meets ECF, DUSHOM, and program specific monitors as outlined by director and Chief of Staff. Ensure delivery of high quality care for patients in G&ECS and HBPC by working with facility and VISN leadership.

Coordinate and promote service level Quality Improvement and Utilization Review by stimulating parent services. Ensure adequate medical record documentation, organize in-service programs and encourage continuing medical education to staff, while participating in all these activities.

As chair of Geriatrics Multidisciplinary Committee ensure adequate patient safety and care by reviewing incident report summaries and other performance improvement programs by helping and tracking needed changes. Work with the infection control nurse, patient safety coordinator, and wound care coordinator to ensure compliance with infection control and patient safety goals.

Ensure PM&RS staff provide evaluation and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders in the outpatient clinic. Assist in development of policies, procedures, and guidelines for appropriate referral of patients to PM&RS including chiropractic clinic and the therapeutic clinics. Ensure delivery of high quality of care for patients by working with committees such as: Clinical Guidelines committee, Peer Review committee, and Major Medical Equipment.

Ensures PM&RS staff thoroughly evaluate patients for electric mobility equipment. Ensure that patients admitted to the Rehabilitation Focus ward are all evaluated and recommended for treatment in the appropriate therapy clinics. Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
