Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Assuring that all Psychiatric staff receive education on assessing and managing pain. Monitoring and evaluating the quality of care provided in the Psychiatry Section, including access, efficiency, effectiveness and appropriateness of care and treatment of patients served by the SL and the clinical/professional performance of all individuals in the Psychiatry Section.

Monitoring and evaluation within the Psychiatry Section will include case reviews, quality of psychosocial intakes, drug-usage evaluation, medical record reviews, risk management, patient safety data, sentinel event data, appropriateness of clinical practice patterns, and utilization review as reported by committees tasked with these functions.

Assuring that individuals in the Psychiatry Section with clinical privileges competently provide service within the scope of privileges granted. Recommending to the Medical Executive Board the criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the Psychiatry Section. Recommending appointment and clinical privileges for each medical staff member of the Psychiatry Section.

Reviewing Psychiatry provider performance improvement activities and data as part of the renewal of privileges/scope of practice. Developing and implementation of procedures that guide & support the provision of care, treatment & services within the Psychiatry Section. Continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care, treatment, and services within the Psychiatry Section.

Reviewing appropriate supply and demand data within individual Psychiatry clinics via a variety of reports. Pulling and reviewing reports related to Psychiatry provider clinic utilization as mapped to the assigned MCA DSS labor report; ensuring maximum use of provider time to accommodate patient care needs and balance supply & demand based on variation to the system. Developing backlog reduction plans for the Psychiatry Section when delays occur.

Assisting the Mental Health Programs Manager in developing and executing a viable contingency plan policy & process within the Psychiatry Section. Promoting and enforcing compliance with access targets, measures, metrics, policies, etc. withing the Psychiatry Section. Reviewing Psychiatry clinic profiles on a regular basis & updating as appropriate. All other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30 pm

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
