Perform or supervise essential ICU procedures such as central line placement, arterial line insertion, intubation, and ventilator management. Develop individualized care plans in coordination with multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Manage complex postoperative complications and post-op care for surgical patients. Conduct daily patient rounds and participate in multidisciplinary team discussions.
Maintain accurate, timely documentation in electronic health records; communicate critical information to care teams and families. Mentor and educate residents, medical students, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals in critical care medicine. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, comply with VA standards, and adhere to infection control and safety protocols.
Contribute to clinical research and scholarly activities; present and publish findings as appropriate. Provide 24/7 ICU coverage through participation in rotational on-call scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays; respond promptly to emergencies and acute care needs.
Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and allied health professionals to deliver cohesive, high-quality patient care; serve as a resource within and beyond the ICU. Work Schedule: Part-time position (20 hours per week) with participation in a rotational on-call schedule to provide 24/7 ICU coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays. (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor.
The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
