Job Summary

The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking a Part-Time, Physician - Gastroenterology to join the Specialty Care Service Line at the VAMC in Iowa City, Iowa.

Key Responsibilities

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran.

This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. The incumbent has clinical responsibilities under the guidance and direction of the Chief of Gastroenterology.

The physician participates, oversees, and collaborates to ensure that all applicable clinical functions are performed. Duties include, but are not limited to: Provide timely, courteous, and comprehensive gastroenterology and hepatology care to Veterans through inpatient consult services, outpatient clinics, endoscopy, telehealth, and e-consults.

Diagnose and manage chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, viral hepatitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, alcohol associated liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance, and other hepatobiliary conditions. Provide pre- and post-liver-transplant hepatology care and collaborate with regional or national transplant centers to coordinate transplant evaluation, referral, follow-up, and management of transplant-related issues.

Perform and interpret standard GI procedures, including EGD and colonoscopy, within the physician's credentialed scope of practice. Support access to specialty GI and hepatology services for rural Veterans through telehealth, e-consults, virtual case review, clinical outreach, and coordination with community-based outpatient clinics.

Participate in clinical quality-improvement, performance-measure, and patient safety activities within the Gastroenterology Section and the facility. Contribute to strategic planning for gastroenterology, hepatology, liver transplant coordination and rural-health initiatives. Attend and provide input to outpatient clinic management meetings and other committees, councils, clinical conferences, and administrative meetings as required.

Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to provide coordinated care. Participate in the education and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees, as applicable. Communicate with patients, families, visitors, volunteers, and staff in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

Provide consistent information in accordance with established policies and procedures, and address conflicts or concerns constructively and appropriately. Participate in on-call coverage, after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage as scheduled. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
