Commitment to excellence in patient care and an interest in teaching are essential. A record of contribution to the scientific literature is preferred, as is a willingness to participate in clinical trials. The Tucson VA is tertiary care facility providing a full range of clinical services including complex coronary angioplasty, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, structural heart procedures, navigational bronchoscopy and Mohs surgery.
It has been a flagship quality provider within the VA and was a 2012 winner of the prestigious Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award. In the recently released CMS hospital ratings, we are a five-star facility. We are in a growth area for the VA. Consequently, the VA is open to major capital investment in our facility; we have a hybrid OR and are in the construction phase for expansions of Primary Care and Emergency Medicine.
SAVACHS is the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Candidates must be eligible for a facility appointment with the University of Arizona commensurate with clinical experience and academic achievement in order to facilitate teaching of medical students, residents and fellows. All our division members participate in outpatient clinic services including fellows' clinic.
Our hospitalist service reduces the demands of in-patient care on our subspecialty divisions. Proficiency in standard endoscopy procedures is expected. There is an opportunity to perform advanced endoscopy procedures if it fits the candidates interest and expertise. Excellent facilities and equipment are in place. Our GI service provides some remote care through telehealth and video visits; medical subspecialists are not required to travel to our affiliated rural clinics.
There are numerous opportunities for clinical research and collaboration in research projects. Preference will be given to candidates who are board certified or recently board eligible in gastroenterology. A track record of success in education and/or research will be noted in the selection process. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in quality improvement activities and comply with rules and regulations of the agency, facility and department.
The incumbent will also support a satisfactory process for supervision and training of fellows, residents and medical students from University of Arizona College of Medicine rotating through the GI Division. Like all GI staff, the candidate must maintain American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification. A commitment to compliance with VA and SAVAHCS regulatory requirements is expected.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
