Job Summary

The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS) is looking for a physician to serve as a clinician investigator in its Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC).

Key Responsibilities

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran.

This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. The MVAHCS is a tertiary referral health care facility with affiliated hospital and community-based clinics.

It is a major teaching site for medical students, residents, fellows and allied health trainees, and it maintains a large, well-funded research program. The University of Minnesota (UMN) is our primary academic affiliate.

The MVAHCS GRECC is an interdisciplinary center of excellence with a three-part mission: (1) conduction of geriatrics and gerontology research; (2) development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of models of clinical services that enhance care and improve health outcomes for older Veterans; and (3) education and development of current and future geriatrics and gerontology investigators, educators, clinicians and leaders.

Historically, MVAHCS GRECC activities have focused on aging brain. The candidate will contribute to the MVAHCS GRECC mission to conduct research to improve the health and welfare of older Veterans, develop innovative clinical models of geriatric care, and advance the geriatric education of clinical health care staff and trainees.

More specifically, the candidate will: (1) develop, secure funding support for, conduct and publish geriatrics-related research (approximately 70% FTE); (2) deliver geriatrics-related clinical service (approximately 20% FTE); and (3) deliver clinical geriatrics-related education for VA clinical staff and medical and allied health trainees (approximately 10% FTE).

Eligible individuals should have a demonstrated history of grant funding for academic initiatives and a strong track record of collaboration. Research and clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of older patients with cognitive disorders is a high priority.

Experience in didactic and clinical geriatric education for clinical staff and trainees, in clinical innovation or quality improvement initiatives, and in program development and evaluation also are highly valued. The candidate will be expected to obtain an academic appointment with the University of Minnesota (UMN) Medical School (e.g., Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care).

The candidate is expected to obtain an academic appointment through the University of Minnesota (UMN) Medical School (e.g., Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care) and to participate in activities in their academic home departments at the MVAHCS and UMN. Some GRECC physicians have contributed clinical service to their MVAHCS home academic departments at the discretion of the GRECC Director though this is not explicitly required for this position.
